Learn To Play Hockey

Why Choose Sherwood Learn To Play Hockey Program?

The Mission of the Sherwood Ice Arena Learn To PlayHockey Program is to provide an instructional experience that allows each student to improve his/her skills, knowledge of the game, and self-confidence through a “positive” learning experience.

The Learn To Play Hockey Program is for all ages and assumes that students are  serious about playing hockey. Full hockey gear is required. All students must complete Sherwood’s Learn To Skate Pre Alpha class or must be evaluated in a  private lesson with a Sherwood skating coach before entering the Learn To Play Hockey Program. Full gear includes a helmet with full face shield, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin pads, skates, gloves and stick.

Our Philosophy is simple.

The Sherwood Ice Arena Learn To Play Hockey Program is dedicated to making the game of hockey fun for everyone who plays it. By learning and developing the appropriate fundamental skills and knowledge of the game, every player will gain the confidence to be able to compete and enjoy the game at every age and skill level.

Students will graduate to the next level of the program when they show mastery of their current level’s objectives.

A new “Learn To Play Hockey” experience has been added to our program for all youth 14 and under – “Game Time!”

The LTPH Game Time will be offered as an additional session only available to LTPH registrants.  No Drop ins will be allowed.  Our desire and goal is to provide top notch hockey skills instruction once a week on Thursday evenings and learn and have fun putting those skills to the test in “Game Time” play on Sunday mornings at 11:15am. “Game Time” will became a permanent part of the LTPH program beginning in the December/January session.

  • The time for “Game Time” will begin at 11:15am and will run until 12:45pm on Sundays.
  • Sunday’s “Game Time” will be a controlled scrimmage with youth of similar skill sets. Designed to teach the rules of the game (offside, icing, positional play, team play, penalties, warm up etc).  Each on ice session will begin with an overview of the basic rules of the game followed by a scrimmage, controlled by an on-ice SIA hockey coach.
  • The cost for “Game Time” is $15 per session payable at the beginning of each semester. LTPH students joining part way through a semester will be prorated.
